Everyone, no matter who they are, should have the opportunity to be active. Because moving our bodies boosts our health and wellbeing like nothing else; it’s essential for us all. However we live in a world that makes it difficult to be active – too much gets in the way and too often the vital benefits of activity aren’t open to everyone, especially those people living in the most deprived communities across the Liverpool City Region.
That’s why MSP are working with Sport England and our local Places to design physical activity back into our lives. These ‘Place Partnerships’ will make it easy, safe and normal for everyone in the Liverpool City Region to be active. Our region’s workplaces, schools, communities, local authorities and health experts are joining forces to open up the opportunity to move. This is community powered action, because people in our region make amazing things happen when they work together.
Across the Liverpool City Region we look out for each other – we pull together to get things done. Supporting place-based working is a key role for MSP. We’re Sport England funded System Partners working to meet the ambitions of the sector-wide strategy for England: Uniting the Movement. MSP are supporting each of the six Places across the Liverpool City Region (Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and Wirral). Place-based is all about meeting the specific needs of each place. So it can look different from one place to the next.
A key aspect of place-based work is not what is done, but how it is done. The focus of the work is understanding the needs and strengths of people and place, breaking down barriers and building relationships. We work with partners across all layers of the socio-ecological model; the focus isn’t about building new facilities or funding more short-term programmes, it is focusing on people and lasting community powered change. This takes time and is a different approach to what we have done in the past. Conditions for Change have been developed, showing what may be necessary for place-based approaches to address inequalities. A Liverpool City Region Evaluation & Learning Framework will be co-produced to help support our six Places demonstrate progress. This will also help share learning and support each other on the journey.
The work is led by local partners, supported regionally by MSP and nationally enabled by Sport England. This work will dovetail with key pillars that MSP are supporting at a Liverpool City Region level – these include a focus on women and girls, children and young people, the health and social care sector, active environments and workforce.
