#ActiveSoles

What is Active Soles?

Active Soles is a social movement designed to give people permission to wear comfortable footwear – especially in workplace settings – that encourages them to be more active during the day.  It was initiated by colleagues in Greater Manchester and has spread across other parts of the country.

MSP wants to see a culture across the Liverpool City Region where it is acceptable, and the norm, to wear comfortable footwear at all times.  We’re liaising with well known figures and organisations across the region who can act as ambassadors for the moment.

Why should we be promoting Active Soles?

  • We want to see systemic barriers to inactivity broken down, in particular in workplace settings where more traditional/’professional’ footwear may discourage employees from moving more.  Active Soles is just the start – it can develop into active meetings, active breaks, active travel etc
  • It’s a practical, tangible and visible thing that senior leaders can get behind, especially if they see others on board
  • Active Soles supports wider system outcomes, for example the green agenda, climate change, health (e.g. reducing obesity) and economic growth (e.g. increasing employee retention/wellbeing)

How can we promote Active Soles?

  • Think about any face to face meetings that you facilitate or attend at work – can we be including Active Soles as part of the pre-event/meeting information to participants?
  • Can we then help to raise awareness by taking a photo of people wearing their comfortable footwear and then promote via social media to help spread the message?
