Making Move for 10 Work for Women in Liverpool City Region

10 minutes of movement, 10 times a month.

For many women across Liverpool City Region (LCR), finding an uninterrupted hour to exercise isn’t realistic. Between work, caring responsibilities, financial pressures, and daily life, traditional fitness spaces and activities often feel inaccessible.

Our regional data shows that patterns of inactivity are shaped by everyday barriers and systemic inequalities – so telling women to try harder neither works nor gets to the heart of the problem.

That’s why the launch of Sport England’s new This Girl Can: Move for 10 challenge is so welcome. Instead of suggesting major lifestyle overhauls, the campaign takes away the pressure and meets women where they are.

Here’s how we can ensure this national campaign is translated into meaningful, local action across our six boroughs – including tailored guides for making Move for 10 work in your local area.

What is Move for 10?

Even short periods of movement can contribute to our physical and mental wellbeing.

The latest UK Chief Medical Officers’ Physical Activity Guidelines make it clear that any activity is better than none, and the biggest health gains come from moving from complete inactivity to any form of movement.

So, the Move for 10 campaign keeps things simple by asking women to:

  • Move for 10 minutes: Whether it’s briskly walking the school run, lunges while the kettle boils, or kitchen dancing – it all counts.
  • Do it 10 times across a month: Short, manageable bursts over 30 days with no rigid routines.
  • Log it your way: Track progress online using the free digital tracker on the This Girl Can website, or print a paper tracker.

Reaching More Women Across LCR

Building on our collective commitment to the Brighton Plus Helsinki Declaration, our priority is ensuring this campaign reaches the women facing the steepest barriers to being active.

Across our six boroughs, we are asking partners to intentionally centre and engage:

  • Women from lower-income backgrounds.
  • South Asian and Muslim women.
  • Black women.
  • Women aged 55-74.
  • Pregnant women and women with a child under one year old.
  • Disabled women and women living with long-term health conditions.

Bringing Move for 10 to Life Locally

Six tailored borough guides will help to make supporting this campaign as easy as possible for local organisations in Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens, and Wirral.

Each three-page resource includes:

  • Practical ways to promote Move for 10: Quick and simple ways for GP surgeries, housing associations, libraries, and community groups to share the campaign via existing newsletters, noticeboards, and chat groups.
  • 10 everyday movement ideas: Simple ideas to inspire women to build movement into their normal routines.
  • Local activities and oppotunities: A curated list of free and low-cost opportunities specific to each borough, including community walking groups, outdoor gyms, parkruns, and local wellbeing circles.
