The NHS North West Games is an annual series of events to encourage NHS employees to come together to take part in a series of fun and friendly inter-Trust sport competitions. Initiated by the Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust, the event first ran in 2011 and has had entry from over 20 NHS Trusts and thousands of NHS employees from across the North West of England over seven years. All events and activities are inclusive, allowing people of any age, ability or level of fitness to be able to take part.
One of the main outcomes of the NHS North West Games is to improve physical activity levels of staff – research conducted by MSP showed that only 25% of Merseyside NHS staff meet physical activity guidelines (considerably below the local workplace average of 60%), demonstrating a need to provide more opportunities to inspire NHS staff to become active.
The NHS North West Games is coordinated by a steering group of NHS Trusts and organisations, supported by MSP capacity in the planning, delivery and evaluation of events. Participating NHS Trusts and organisations each pay a small fee that is accumulated together to cover the cost of running the events, which means that participation for NHS staff is free (providing that their Trust has signed up).
In 2015 the future of the event began to look uncertain and there was talk of shelving it, however, MSP was pleased to get the chance to step in and see what we could do to revitalise the event and ensure that the great work that had been done to get it started wasn’t lost.
