In 2018 the nationwide School Games initiative committed to engaging a broader group of children, encouraging participation and developing more opportunities for appropriate-level competition. In the Liverpool City Region, we were delighted to help deliver against this commitment at a local level and during 2019 we continued the journey with this ‘developmental’ pathway:
Girls’ Rugby: The RFU has long been involved with the Level 3 School Games in the Liverpool City Region, helping in past years to deliver Level 2 pathway competition. In 2018 they were delighted to be offered the opportunity to trial a new approach as part of the ‘developmental’ pathway, focussing on offering a whole day of fixtures, where the emphasis was on the enjoyment of the game. In 2019 the following schools picked up awards: 1st place – De La Salle; 2nd place – Haydock; 3rd place – Stanley High; and the Spirit of the Games trophy went to The Academy of St Francis of Assisi.
Futsal: Liverpool Futsal came on board for the first time in 2018, inviting local School Games Organisers to nominate teams they felt deserved to have a place in the first-ever Futsal competition in the history of the event. Another great day of competition was enjoyed by participants in 2019, with Mosspits taking first place, followed by Plantation and Booker, whilst Murdishaw West took Spirit of the Games.
Dodgeball: British Dodgeball delivered the first-ever ‘developmental’ competition in 2018, which proved a massive success. The sport returned for a second time this year, with Whiston Willis taking the top spot in the competition, Lander Road scooping second place and St Gabriel’s taking third. The ‘Spirit of the Games’ award went to The Grange.
Waterpolo: This sport was introduced in 2018 and led fantastically by Niki Horton, School Swimming Officer for School Improvement Liverpool. Following a successful first year, plans were in place to include it the sport in 2019, however unexpected problems with the pool meant it had to be put on hold. Hopes are high though for a return of this sport in 2020!
