Sportshall Athletics 2026: Energy, Impact, and Outcomes

This year’s Sportshall Athletics event brought together schools from all six boroughs of the Liverpool City Region: Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens, and Wirral.

A cornerstone of the School Games initiative, funded by Sport England, Sportshall Athletics provides a fast-paced, indoor version of track and field designed to be inclusive and accessible to pupils from primary-school age and up.

Hosted by the Merseyside Sports Partnership team, spearheaded on the days by the region’s brilliant School Games Organisers, and hosted by Greenbank Sports Academy, it was a real celebration of the joy that movement can bring.

The Competition in Numbers

Sportshall Athletics is the UK’s largest school sports programme. Originally created by Liverpool’s own George Bunner MBE to provide a safe, indoor training environment, it has evolved into a key pillar of the School Games initiative.

This year’s Liverpool City Region finals showcased the impressive reach of the programme, with 821 young people from 67 schools participating over two days:

Day One: Secondary Finals (17th March)

The morning was dedicated to secondary school boys, followed by the girls’ competition in the afternoon. In total, 382 young people from 47 schools took part.

Day Two: Primary and SEND Finals (18th March)

The second day focused on our primary stars and an inclusive SEND event, ensuring sport remains a space for everyone.

  • Primary Finals: 374 young people from 14 schools.
  • Inclusive SEND Event: 65 young people from 6 schools.

A Collaborative Success

Coordinating an event for over 800 young athletes is a significant task that relies on strong partnerships. With that in mind, we would like to thank the School Games Organisers (SGOs) and Greenbank staff for their work in ensuring both days ran smoothly.

A special thank you goes to the Sports Leaders: the young volunteers who acted as officials and motivators. Their contribution was essential for creating an inclusive environment where all participants felt supported.

Congratulations to the Participants

Finally, a huge congratulations to every young athlete who represented their school!

The energy and determination on display were truly impressive. By taking part, you demonstrated the power of sport to bring communities together and strengthen belonging.

We look forward to seeing your continued progress as you find more ways to stay active across the Liverpool City Region.
